On last night, my dearest husband, Greg (Superman) and I had the joy of singing with the 82nd Annual Tommy A. Dorsey Reunion Choir at the Tommy A. Dorsey Convention in Indianapolis, IN, at the request of a dear friend and musical director. The music seemed to invoke a sweet savor in that room. Certainly God’s presence smiled in appreciation of the praise that was given Him. As I sang I was conscious of the triumph in Mr Dorsey’s trials and how tragedy gave this man a new song and a new life.
Known as “Georgia Tom”, Tommy A. Dorsey (1899-1993) was an accomplished jazz artist, record company agent and composer. He had written over 400 songs. “Tight Like That” sold over 7 million copies. He was on top. He was moving and grooving. In 1932 however, he would face an episode in his life that would literally bring him to his knees. He experienced the depths and darkness of a horrendous pit experience. In 1932 his wife died in child birth. Two days later the child, a son, also died. That asphyxiating experience of grief lead him to write “Precious Lord, Take My Hand”. This man, changed his life and a world because of God’s grace and mercy in his personal pit experience! He penned a song of his trust and faith in the mightiness of God in the midst of despair and in doing so, showed millions that if we just trust Him, God will put a new song in our hearts and deliver us! Thomas A. Dorsey went on to write “Peace in The Valley” and “Highway to Heaven”. Many Gospel Greats are authored by Thomas A. Dorsey. To God be the glory!!!!
Psalm 40:1-3
For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.
1 I waited patiently for the Lord;he turned to me and heard my cry. 2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.
